“We don’t wanna go home, Mommy! We wanna stay here!” Darren had been cranky all morning and Lainey’s nerves were wearing thin. She didn’t want to go home either, but they had to.

“Darren, we’ve been through this already.” Not wanting to waste her last hours alone with Eve sleeping, Lainey was tired. They had spent the time talking about their wonderful day with the boys, and when they weren’t talking, they were making love. The only thing Lainey regretted was that Eve had deliberately steered away from any conversation that involved her or her childhood.

“Yeah, squirt. We have to go back to school tomorrow, remember?” Kevin could tell that his mother was a bit irritable herself, so he tried to help with Darren.

“But, I don’t wanna! I wanna stay here with Eve! I don’t wanna go to school or go home.”

“Darren! That is enough!” Lainey snapped angrily. The whining was just too much for her to handle right now. She heard Darren sniffle and rushed to put her arms around him. “Oh, honey. Mommy’s sorry.” She kissed him on the top of the head. “You know we have to go home. I’d love to stay here, too, but we can’t. You have school, I have a job, and we have to go back to reality.” Lainey’s voice wavered and she fought to control it. No matter how much she wanted break down and cry with Darren, she couldn’t. She had to be strong for him, for both of them.

“But, if we go home, we’ll never see Eve again.” Darren sniffled again and wiped at his tears.

“Why do you say that, honey? We’ll see Eve,” Lainey said, even though she understood his fears. Hadn’t she also been afraid of things changing and losing what she and Eve have?

“She won’t come and see us,” Darren said, wiping his nose with a napkin. “And she’ll forget about us.”

“How could I forget about you?” Eve appeared in the doorway, looking cool and collected in white shorts and tank top.

“I don’t know,” Darren answered shyly. “We won’t get to see you every day, and you’ll be busy.”

“I’ll never be too busy for you,” Eve interrupted softly. “Even if we don’t get to see each other every day, I’ll be thinking about you. You can call me, or come by and visit me anytime you want.”

“Really?”

“Really. You and Kevin are very special to me.” She glanced over at Kevin and winked. “Your mom is very special to me. You guys are a part of my life now. You’re going to see so much of me you’re going to get tired of me.”

“We’ll never get tired of you.” Kevin’s voice was so quiet that Eve barely heard him. She smiled warmly at him and reached over to kiss him gently on the cheek.

“Thank you,” she whispered and turned her attention back to Darren, wiping his cheek. “No more tears. I’m not going anywhere. You’re stuck with me, kiddo.”

Darren threw his arms around Eve. “Promise?”

“Promise.”

“I love you, Eve,” Darren said quietly.
